With Friendster announcing its entrance to the ‘third stage’ of Friendster development last month, they are opening up their database to third party developers to use them in their applications, or what they call ‘Friendster Widgets‘. This can be done by building widgets on the Friendster Platform which is part of the third stage in Friendster development.
It’s been nearly 2 weeks since their announcement, and there are already a few widgets which are avaiable for users to choose from and embed them into their user profile. Currently Friendster Widgets are categorize into 6 category, namely:
- Slideshows & Photos
- Just For Fun
- Entertainment
- Games
- Video
- Music
You can choose to use any widgets you like to your preference. The Widgets Directory will list out all the widgets available for you to add into your Friendster Profile. After adding a widget, it will then sit neatly into a box in your Friendster Profile.
Currently, widgets available on Friendster are created by 5 companies only, namely:
There isn’t alot of widgets for you choose from right now, since it’s pretty new. More friendster widgets are needed to appeal the users. Even before the announcement of Friendster widgets, Friendster users are already embedding their Slide.com slideshows, imeem playlists into their profile.

Until more widgets that are useful and able to enhance a user’s experience comes out, Friendster Widgets does not have much useful applications other than video, music, photo manipulations.

I couldn’t agree more - Friendster needs more application.. the ones they have right now are normal.. appealing more to the younger generation.. i believe in time Friendster will have more applications.. what i’m hoping so much for is the RSS feed like you mentioned.. :)
